Gwyneth Paltrow is the latest to be cast in the Iron Man movie. She'll play Pepper Potts, Tony Stark's longtime secretary and confidant. This is the first film to be produced directly by Marvel Entertainment and so far it looks great. Paltrow makes this an all star cast by joining Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man/Tony Stark), Terrence Howard (James Rhodes) and director Jon Favreau. Click here to read the full article.

Wow... it's January and I might have just watched my favorite film of 2007. One generation from now, the human race can no longer have children. Scientists don't know why... the last birth happened 18 years ago. In this bleak future the world has gone mad. I don't want to say to much about the story because I don't want to ruin anything. This film would be much more enjoyed if you go see it knowing very little about it. Although the film is set in the future, there is realism in this movie that most filmakers only dream of pulling off. There's also social commentary to the story that is not heavy handed, but shows that very rarely are any one side of a dispute right. The acting is supperb, the dialogue is great... and the action scenes are incredible. These aren't action scenes that you would see in a Hollywood blockbuster, but action scenes that seem so real, and most of them are done in one shot-scenes... it boggles the mind as to how they pulled it off. This movie is by no means an action movie however... and it shouldn't be just called a Sci-Fi movie either. It's a Drama with Sci-Fi elements in it... and a few action scenes here and there. Go see this film NOW.
Grade: 4 out of 4 Stars (Excellent)

The story of a young Hannibal Lector. Will this be any good? Who knows. The trailer has me intrigued as hell however. It looks creepy, and the premise of the film is logical. Some of what Hannibal the Cannibal did is mentioned in Manhunter, Silence of the Lambs and Red Dragon and then we saw what he was capable of doing after in Hannibal, but we've never actually seen what started it all for the most interesting character in all those movies. The first question is if people are going to be able to accept someone else playing the part of Hannibal Lector? That's always tricky when a character is made famous by a certain actor. I hope they pull it off.

Star Trek XI Rumors

J.J. Abrams (Lost, Mission: Impossible III) was said to be the director of the new Start Trek film... now it looks like these might have been premature. Paramount won't confirm it... yet. Some sites report that Abrams has the option of directing it if he wants, but hasn't decided yet... some other sites claim he wasn't even offered it. The only thing that is certain concerning Abrams is that he is producing the film.

Nothing is really known about the plot either. Most rumors, and what most people belive is that the film is going to be a prequel... not just a prequel to the movies, but a prequel to the original Star Trek series. Most rumors say that the movie will center on a young James Kirk and Spock. When though? That's all over the place... some sites report that it'll take place while they were in Starfleet Academy, some say it's not that far off...

Casting... the casting rumors are all over the place. Everything from Matt Damon as James T. Kirk and Ben Affleck as Spock. Yes... Affleck. Obviously that last rumour has to be prepostrous... but it gives you an idea that most rumours that are being reported on the internet are probably false. So far the only person who really knows what's going on is J.J. Abrams, the writers and Paramount Pictures... and so far they seem to be staying pretty tight lipped about it.

Ok, maybe it's not the funniest animated movie to come out in years, and it's not the best animation ever... but it is one of the funniest animated movies to come out THIS year (which isn't saying that much). It does have it's moments, and is quite funny at times. It never does explain how a cow can be male (and not be a bull) but I digress. Still a fun movie, and kids should love it.

An Evening with Kevin Smith 2

I bought Clerk II this week... and ended up buying An Evening with Kevin Smith 2: Evening Harder. I popped it in last night and thought I was just going to watch a few minutes... and ended up watching the whole thing... both discs.

Ok... first off. What is An Evening with Kevin Smith you may ask. The first DVD featured the "best of" Kevin Smith's 5 college tour in 2001/2002 where he answered questions from the students... basically ANY questions ranging from experiences in Hollywood, religion, his relationship with Jason Mewes, Star Wars and one of his favorite subjects: Ben Affleck... and so many other things. His stories about writing a script for a new Superman movie is a personal favorite. Basically what happens is this... Kevin Smith is asked a question... and you have NO IDEA where he is going to end up with his answers. Smith loves to talk... and I mean LOVES to talk. The good thing though is that he's funny, and has no shame.

An Evening with Kevin Smith 2: Evening Harder: Is it as good as the first one? Not exactly... Smith is smart enough to avoid covering the same material as before... but he covered practically his entire carreer in the first one. Is it still funny? Oh god yes. This time around it's only between two locations. The first disc is when Kevin went to Toronto... and the second is when he went to London. He covers everything... Prince... Mel Gibson... Star Wars... Tim Hortons... Dora the Explorer... porn... and of course Ben Affleck.

It's not for everyone though... oh god it's not for everyone. Smith kinda swears a lot... and seems to like talking about blow jobs a lot. However rude and crude he is though... he is also very intelligent. He also seems to poke fun at himself a lot more then he pokes fun at other people. All in all.. I'm very happy with my purchase.

I like the look of it. In the comic books, the original basically looked like a flying bathtub... I don't think there's any fan boys out there that was hoping for that look... this works for me. It's funny how this simple vehicle is actually an important part of the Fantastic Four mythos.

Superman Returns

Here's the question: Will I buy this? I dunno. I won't buy it because I thought it was a great movie... it was an ok movie. I don't want to be the typical person that bitches about movies on the internet... but for those of you who disagree with me feel free to tell me why... BUT... tell me what is so great about this movie, and do it without saying anything about the special effects. Yes.. the SFX are amazing in this movie... but great SFX do not make a great movie. In fact you can have a great movie with crappy SFX, but not the other way around. I thought the acting was subpar, the story... I thought the story was simply ridiculous. Ok... first off... Bryan Singer directed this movie. I loved X-Men and X2... and I loved The Usual Suspects. He loved the orignal Superman movie, and Superman 2... and wanted to make a sequel to those films (ignoring 3 and 4... thank God). Here lies the problem. Comic Books have matured over the years... and it seems the Superman movies have not. Lex Luther's evil plan in the movie... is something out of a 1970s Sci-Fi B Movie. I tell you what it is... but I wouldn't want to spoil anything. And what's with Superman's leather cap?? Anyways... if you want a more inteligent review as to why this movie is kinda good and not great, I encourage you to read Roger Ebert's Review of the movie. He gave it 2 out of 4 Stars. Oh yeah... why would I say I don't know if I'll buy the movie or not.. since I didn't think it was a great movie? Well... I'm a comic book geek afterall.

Clerks II

Ok... this movie... this DVD... I'm going to go buy it during my lunch break today. This is a movie made for Gen Xers... this is a movie made for me. It references some stuff that would make no sense to anyone else. Grown men discussing the difference between Transformers and Go-Bots... while also discussing the proper edicate for "ass to mouth" (if you don't know... then don't ask). Yes.. Randal and Dante are worth revisiting a decade latter. In my view... I think this is the best Kevin Smith movie since Chasing Amy or Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. There's subject matter in this film that is concidered taboo.. and might offend some people.. to those people I say get a sense of humour. Anyways... I can't wait to watch this again... and again... and again.

The Prestige

"Are you watching closely?"

These are the first words you hear in this film, and it seems some people weren't listening. As soon as the credits started rolling on The Prestige, a young woman sitting behind us got up and said "That is the most complicated movie I've ever seen in my life... I didn't understand anything!!" Carrie and my sister Nadine gave each other a look that was hilarious... and my first thought was that the young woman in question was an idiot. She obviously paid no attention to Christian Bale asking us right from the beginning: "Are you watching closely?"

Actually you don't even have to study the movie for it to make sense... you just have to have a bigger attention span then a gerbil for it to make sense, because by the time the credits role, every trick has been explained, and every mystery has been solved.

The movie is about two magicians: Rupert Angier (Hugh Jackman) and Alfred Borden (Christian Bale). To simply say that this film is about two magicians that are trying to outdue each other would simplify it to much, but it's hard to tell you exactly what it's about without spoiling it. I think if you had to pick one theme for the movie it would be obsession. It's not simply obsession to be the greatest magician in the world... it's also obsession over vengeance, betrayal, jealousy and love.

The story takes place during three different time periods that go back and forth, and it's done very well. We start out in the present, go back to when Angier and Borden were feuding... and back even further to when they first met.

Jackman and Bale are great in these roles... and the supporting cast is amazing as well. Michael Caine plays Cutter, an engineer that builds different contraptions for magicians, and Scarlett Johansson is a magician's assistant that gets caught up in the middle of this. David Bowie also plays a surprising role... surprising because of the fact that I didn't recognise him in the movie and only found out after that he was in it... and actually had to check to see who he was! lol

I have to also mention the director: Christopher Nolan. The first movie I've ever seen by Nolan was Memento. I've been a fan ever since. His biggest box office success was Batman Begins, and now it looks like he might have another one on his hands. He likes making dark films, and he's good at it... no... he's amazing at it. Go see this film now...

Trailers & Recomendations

Pan's Labyrinth - Directed by Guillermo del Toro. Some past directed movies like Hellboy, Blade II, Mimic and The Devil's Backbone. This one looks really good. Although if you see it in theatres it'll either be subtitled... or dubbed!! Let's pray for the subtitles. If I'd recommend a movie by this director it would have to be The Devil's Backbone (subtitled).

Tideland - Directed by Terry Gilliam. Some past directed movies: The Brothers Grimm, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Monty Python & The Quest for the Holy Grail, Twelve Monkeys and Brazil. This movie has gotten mixed reviews so far... but it's a Terry Gilliam movie!! I expect it to be very odd either way. Hard to pick one movie to recommend from Gilliam, but i'll pick Twelve Monkeys.

Deja Vu - Directed by Tony Scott. Some past directed movies: Domino, Man on Fire, Spy Game, The Fan, True Romance and Top Gun. Deja Vu looks like it has a nice Sci Fi twist to it, which is unusual for a Tony Scott film. Without a doubt the film I'd recommend from this director is True Romance (writen by Quentin Tarentino).

Grind House

Last night on Spike TV's Scream awards, there was the world premiere of Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez's Grind House Trailer. Grind House is a double feature of shorts featuring "Death Proof" directed by Tarantino and "Planet Terror" directed by Rodriquez. Grind House is pretty much an homage to 1970s exploitation films. Think lots of nudity, violence, profanity, ect, ect.... You could say that Rob Zombie's The Devil's Rejects was in the same genre. The trailer, movie posters, movie titles... everything is made to look like it's an actual 1970's movie. Both directors are also making fake movie trailers to play between the two feature films.

Now... WARNING... this trailer is not for the faint at heart. You do see a zombie or two blowing up, and some other violence.... you've been warned... you still want to see it? Click here!

I went to see The Departed last night. Directed by my favorite director Martin Scorsese. Whithout a doubt THE best movie I've seen this year hands down. I can't even think of anything I didn't like about the movie... even Mark Wahlberg (yes hard to believe).

Anyone who is still bitching that they hate Leonardo DiCaprio needs to let that go. He's an ACTOR, and a damn good one. I'm extremly impressed by his performance in this movie. He's a cop that infiltrates a crew headed by Jack Nicholson, and he's more then a little stressed... and it's totally believable. Nicholson on the other hand looks like he had tones of fun in this movie. Actually... everyone in this movie is superb: DiCaprio, Nicholson, Matt Damon, Alec Baldwin, Martin Sheen, Mark Wahlberg... stellar performances by EVERYONE.

I highly recomend this movie for ANYONE who loves movies.

Various movie stuff of interest... to me anyways...

The Departed - Starts this weekend, by who might be the greatest director of all time: Martin Scorsese. Staring: Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson, Mark Wahlberg, Martin Sheen and Alec Baldwin. View Trailer.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning - Starts this weekend... ok... so it's not made by someone who could be the greatest director of all time, and it's staring people that most folks have never heard of, or don't remember... but I loved the remake that came out a few years ago. Thought it was one of the better horror movies to come out in recent years... which are few and far between. Call it a guilty pleasure if you will. Visit official site and find the trailer.

X-Men: The Last Stand on DVD - Came out yesterday. The movie and sound quality on the DVD is excellent. I read that the director supervised the DVD transfer because simply transering the theatrical version directly to DVD doesn't give you the best quality and sound for home... or so I've been told. Anyways... I got the tin case for it, wich is REALLY cool... but the extras on the DVD are a little disapointing. The only thing on their are Commentaries, Deleted Scenes and the trailers. Other then that theirs only trailers for other junk that's un-X-Men-related. Still an excellent movie though (X2 was still better though).

Robert Downey Jr. is Iron Man - It was announced a while back that Jon Favreau is going to direct Iron Man, and now Robert Downey Jr. has signed on to play the man inside the armor, Tony Stark. I think it's great to have a REAL actor on this project. The movie is also one of the first to be produced directly by Marvel. So far I'm more excited about this movie then I've ever been, and with the rumors that Famke Janssen (Jean Grey in X-Men films) is being concidered for Stark's love interest, and Terrence Howard (Hustle & Flow, Crash) is being concidered for the role of Jim Rhodes this movie is shapping up GREAT.

A Few Movies

Lady in the Water - A very underwhelming movie. I wouldn't argue with anyone who liked it... but I wouldn't be able to recommend it to anyone either... I'd be expecting to tell me my taste in movies suck after that. It might be a nice little movie to watch on a Sunday afternoon... if you like the fantasy/Twilight Zone stuff... but the key word here is UNDERWHELMING... not much actually happens in the movie... I think a good comparison would be to say it's like a 2 hour Twilight Zone episode... with that said it might appeal to some.

The Night Listener - A nice little flick. Robin Williams is at his best I think. I know this is at least the second time he plays a gay man in a movie... can ya name the other one? Anyways... a nice little indie movie (I think it was an indie flick anyways) wich keeps you guessing for the most part and doesn't treat you like you're a complete moron... for the simple fact that some of the characters in the movie point out a few things that you yourself might not have thought about yet.

16 Blocks - This movie was a surprise, I wasn't expecting much, but I was fairly entertained. Bruce Willis is top notch as usual. The story is fairly simple, but keeps you guessing about a few things till the end.

V for Vendetta - Watched VfV again over the weekend. This is a very... and I mean very good flick. It's an action movie that actually has a compelling story to it.. and even has some meaning. Although the filmakers felt it necessary to take quite a few liberties from the original Graphic Novel, I still loved the movie.

Friday night I saw X-Men The Last Stand with Rachel, John, James, Kevin and Amy (I think that was it lol). I wasn't dissapointed... but I thought the movie running at 1 hour and 45 minutes, could have been longer... maybe another 15-20 minutes of story and/or dialogue. Although the movie was great, there are a LOT of characters in this one, and a lot of them have almost no lines... and some of them hardly appear on screen. If they release a director's cut of this on DVD I'm THERE! The movie has more action, then plot... but it was still a great movie. Between the 3 films, I think I might rank it right behind X2. (I think).

There was quite a few surprises in the movie... none of which I'll reveal, but if you go see the movie, stay till the credits are done, otherwise you'll have to go on the internet and read up on what you see after the credits.
